On the plus side, the vast majority of pilots flew very well. The early flights on all 3 days of competition had the advantage of very light winds. By 10:00am the winds picked up, making the pilots really earn their points. At the end of round one there was a lunch break before round two started. Rounds 2 & 3 took place on a Friday and the spectators were rather light in numbers.

On Saturday, October 14, the event was in full swing. The crowd of spectators was much larger and more responsive for most of the flights. During the lunch break, the pilots placed their aircraft at the center line of the landing strip and the spectators were allowed to walk up to them. This was an opportunity they could use to ask the pilots questions and take photographs. This is done at many scale events in the United States and has become very popular with the enthusiasts.
A lot of the questions come from people who actually flew in the full-scale aircraft during the both the war and peacetime. You can actually see the twinkle in their eyes as they relive some of the "good old days". After lunch it was back to the competition. By now most of the pilots had settled down and were concentrating on accurate maneuvers. On Saturday night there was a banquet at which most of the contestants attended. The guest speaker was Col. Robert [Bob] Thacker, USAF, Ret., a General in the military who described how he had to arrange for a small flight group to transfer to the Hawaiian Islands.

Unfortunately his arrival coincided with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He was a most impressive speaker and knew how to blend drama and humour wonderfully.
