It all started as an idea to get people in the LDMFA (Lilydale and District Model Flying Association) back into building a remote control model using skills and techniques that are at risk of disappearing. The prevalence of the ARF model in recent years has had an enormous effect on decreasing the amount of home built models being brought out to the field to fly.

Les Marriner (LDMFA President) introduced the idea to the club that we adopt the RCM X-pert, a basic to intermediate low wing model aircraft that he had flown in earlier years of his aeromodeling as our club model. He encouraged all members to take a plan, buy some balsa and start building.

Down at LDMFA....Some of the first x-perts to be completed.

The club planning to run several styles of competition that the RCM X-pert is suited to.

  1. Aerobatics
  2. Pylon
  3. Fun-Fly

So far there has been a good take-up rate of the model and several compatitions have been run during 1999 and more planed for 2000. It is fabulous that a number of other clubs have taken up the RCM X-pert and are turning up to the numerous complatitions. Other clubs are now starting to host events.

Les Marriner and his beautifully finish x-pert

Not only is the RCM X-pert club model a great way of encouraging the building of models from scratch, but it also gives modellers a chance to try flying in compatitions with a reliable and inexpensive model

Competing in these events not only builds confidence and improves flying skills but give everybody a better appreciation of the different facets of the hobby. This also has a tendency to create a closer knitted club rather that being fragmented into the various different facets.

I’d encourage any other clubs to adopt the concept of a club model, better still try the RCM X-pert and join in the fun
