BACKGROUND
ACES (Air
Combat Elementary Support) was formed in 1996, but the idea of
streamer cutting R/C Combat started long before. On the cover of
an RCM&E 30 years ago, powered flying wings are shown with
streamers attached. In Australia however, ACES has only just
being established. NSW has an affiliated Special Interest Group,
ccoordinated by the ACES National Contact, Damon Ellender. Here
is Victoria however, we are still trying to gain support so that
we can affiliate with the VMAA.
AIMS
The basic aim of ACES is a
contact network for like-minded pilots. It is also both
democratic and a non-profit organization. It is an organization run by pilots, for the pilots, using as little politics that we
can. There are several layers of administration however. From
the International Contact, right down to the Squadron Members.
THE COMPETITION
ACES combat is based on streamer
cutting using 1/12 scale aircraft that are of WWII vintage. The
idea is to cut your opponents streamer without having your own
cut. Action is fast and furious, but also very entertaining for
both spectators and pilots alike. Points are awarded for various
things. Crossing the safety line will lose you 200 points,
failing to engage will lose you 50 points. Cutting an opponents’
streamer will gain you 100 points and landing with yours intact
will gain you an extra 50 points. Even being in the air will get
you 1 point for every three seconds of flight.
A fight will usually last seven
minutes and can have up to a maximum of seven pilots in the air
at a time. It has being discovered that as more aircraft are
airborne, the fun-factor goes up as well, making a true
"target rich environment".
